Business and Professional Women PAC Endorses Lawless

April 3, 2006

-- BPW/PAC is the 5th National Organization to Endorse Lawless

WARWICK, RI – Jennifer Lawless, a candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives from Rhode Island’s 2nd Congressional District, announced today that the Business and Professional Women Political Action Committee (BPW/PAC) has officially endorsed her candidacy.

“I am very excited about the momentum we’re gaining, and I am proud to have BPW/PAC on my team,” said Lawless. “We must continue to fight for equal pay for equal work, and BPW is a great leader in this fight.”

“We are proud to support the Jennifer Lawless campaign for the U.S. House of Representatives,” said Deborah Frett, CEO of Business and Professional Women/USA (BPW/USA). “BPW/PAC recognizes her commitment to issues affecting working women, including economic equity, health care, and civil rights. She has demonstrated her support for these issues throughout her career, and we are confident that when she is elected to the U.S. Congress, working women from Rhode Island and across the nation will have a powerful advocate in Jennifer Lawless.”

“Jennifer Lawless is clearly the top pick for women in the workplace and has shown that she supports BPW’s top legislative issues,” adds BPW/PAC Chair Leslie Wilkins.

Business and Professional Women/USA, founded in 1919, has 1,300 local organizations across the country and members in every congressional district. The mission of BPW/USA is to achieve equity for all women in the workplace through advocacy, education, and information. BPW/PAC is a nonpartisan organization funded solely through voluntary contributions by members of BPW/USA and its state affiliates, including members of BPW/RI. It endorses both women and men, and candidates for federal office in every region of the nation. BPW/PAC was formed in 1979 to assist women and pro-women candidates who support BPW’s legislative platform by providing campaign contributions and endorsements.

Currently, Rhode Island ranks 37th out of the 50 states in terms of the percentage of women in the state legislature. Rhode Island does not have a single female statewide officeholder and has not elected a woman to serve in its congressional delegation in fifteen years. “Now is the time to send a woman to Washington!” said Lawless.
